The Life and Seerah of Prophet Musa (Moses) عليه السلام

The Life and Seerah of Prophet Musa (Moses) عليه السلام

Prophet Musa (Moses) عليه السلام was one of Allah Almighty's great and resolute Messengers. His story is mentioned in the Qur'an more frequently than that of any other prophet—approximately 136 times—and is presented in remarkable detail and beauty. He is known by the title “Kalimullah” (the one who was spoken to by Allah) because Allah Almighty spoke to him directly, without an intermediary or angel. His entire life is a magnificent example of spiritual insight, trust in Allah, courage, and steadfastness upon the truth.

1. His Birth, Early Life, and Miraculous Upbringing

Prophet Musa عليه السلام was born in Egypt into a family of the Children of Israel. At that time, Egypt was ruled by a tyrannical king known as Pharaoh (Fir‘awn).

It was believed that Pharaoh had heard from earlier prophets who had come among the Children of Israel that a prophet would arise from among them who would eventually bring an end to Pharaoh's rule. The claim that priests, fortune-tellers, or astrologers had predicted this event, however, is not established by the Qur'an and should not be treated as a confirmed historical fact.

It was in this frightening situation that Prophet Musa عليه السلام was born. Allah Almighty inspired his mother to nurse him, and when she feared for his safety because of Pharaoh's officials, to place him in a chest and set it afloat on the waters of the Nile. The Qur'an describes how Allah reassured his mother that He would return the child to her and make him one of His messengers.

The waves of the Nile carried the chest to the shore near Pharaoh's palace. When Pharaoh's wife, Asiyah رضي الله عنها, opened the chest and saw the beautiful child, love for him was placed in her heart. She persuaded Pharaoh not to kill the child, saying that he could become a source of comfort and joy for them.

Thus, through the profound wisdom of Allah Almighty, the very child who would become the means of salvation for the Children of Israel and the downfall of Pharaoh's kingdom was brought up within Pharaoh's own palace.

2. The Journey to Madyan and the Meeting with Prophet Shu‘ayb عليه السلام

When Prophet Musa عليه السلام reached adulthood and Allah had blessed him with wisdom, knowledge, and physical strength, an incident occurred in which he struck an Egyptian Coptic man while attempting to help a man from the Children of Israel. The Egyptian died as a result of the blow.

Prophet Musa عليه السلام deeply regretted what had happened and immediately sought Allah's forgiveness.

When Pharaoh's officials began planning to kill him, a well-wisher informed him of the plot. Musa عليه السلام therefore left Egypt and set out toward Madyan. This journey was extremely difficult and full of trials, but he maintained complete trust in Allah.

When he reached Madyan, he found a group of people watering their animals at a well. He helped the daughters of Prophet Shu‘ayb عليه السلام water their livestock, despite being extremely tired and hungry himself.

Impressed by his character, modesty, and honorable conduct, Prophet Shu‘ayb عليه السلام invited him to stay with him and eventually married one of his daughters to him. Prophet Musa عليه السلام remained there for approximately eight to ten years, tending the livestock and living a simple and hardworking life.

3. Prophethood, the Valley of Tuwa, and the Rank of Kalimullah

After completing the agreed period in Madyan, Prophet Musa عليه السلام began his journey back toward Egypt with his family. Near the Valley of Tuwa, in the region of Mount Sinai, he saw a fire.

When he approached the fire, Allah Almighty addressed him directly and spoke to him:

“Indeed, I am Allah. There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance.”

At this place, Allah Almighty granted Prophet Musa عليه السلام the great rank of prophethood and messengership and bestowed upon him two major miracles:

  1. The Staff: When thrown to the ground, it would transform into a huge serpent.

  2. The Shining Hand (Yad al-Bayda): When he placed his hand under his arm and then withdrew it, it would emerge shining brightly.

At the request of Prophet Musa عليه السلام, Allah Almighty also appointed his brother Prophet Harun (Aaron) عليه السلام as a prophet, so that he could serve as his adviser and support him in this great mission of conveying the message.

4. Calling Pharaoh to the Truth and the Demonstration of Miracles

Prophet Musa عليه السلام was commanded to go to Pharaoh. Allah instructed him to speak to Pharaoh with “Qawl-e-Layyin” (gentle speech) so that he might take heed or become fearful of Allah.

Prophet Musa and Prophet Harun عليهما السلام went before Pharaoh and invited him to worship the One Allah and to release the Children of Israel from his oppression and bondage.

Pharaoh responded with arrogance and pride, claiming lordship, and dismissed the miracles of Musa عليه السلام as “magic.”

Pharaoh gathered the most skilled magicians from throughout the land and arranged a great public contest. The people assembled to witness it.

The magicians threw down their staffs and ropes, which appeared to the people as though they were moving like snakes. But when Prophet Musa عليه السلام, by Allah's command, threw down his staff, it became a great serpent and swallowed up all the false displays produced by the magicians.

When they witnessed this undeniable miracle, all the magicians fell into prostration and declared their faith in the Lord of Musa and Harun, despite Pharaoh's threats and warnings.

5. The Exodus from Egypt and the Miracle of the Splitting of the Sea

As Pharaoh's stubbornness and persecution of the Children of Israel intensified, Allah Almighty commanded Prophet Musa عليه السلام to take the Children of Israel out of Egypt during the night.

When Pharaoh learned of their departure, he set out with his great army in pursuit of them.

When the Children of Israel reached the sea, they found an immense body of water before them and Pharaoh's deadly army approaching from behind. Terrified, they cried:

“Indeed, we have been overtaken!”

At this critical moment, the deep faith and complete trust of Prophet Musa عليه السلام became evident in his words:

“Never! Indeed, my Lord is with me; He will surely guide me.”

Allah Almighty commanded Prophet Musa عليه السلام to strike the sea with his staff. As soon as he did so, the sea parted and twelve dry pathways were formed, while the water stood on both sides like enormous mountains.

The Children of Israel crossed the sea safely. When Pharaoh and his army entered the same pathways and reached the middle of the sea, Allah commanded the waters to come together again. Pharaoh and his entire army were drowned.

As Pharaoh was drowning, he declared his belief, but his faith at that moment was not accepted. Allah preserved his body as a sign and lesson for later generations.

6. The Trials of the Wilderness and the Attitude of the Children of Israel

After being saved from Pharaoh, Prophet Musa عليه السلام led the Children of Israel toward the wilderness of Sinai.

As part of their training and preparation, Allah Almighty summoned Prophet Musa عليه السلام to Mount Sinai for forty nights, where he was given the Tawrah (Torah).

While Musa عليه السلام was at the mountain, a man named al-Samiri misled the Children of Israel. He made a calf from gold, and many of the people began worshipping it.

When Prophet Musa عليه السلام returned, he was deeply distressed and angered by this act of polytheism and disobedience. He confronted the people, and the golden calf was destroyed and cast away.

Because of the repeated disobedience of the Children of Israel, their excessive questioning, and their refusal to enter the Holy Land and fight as commanded, Allah decreed that they would wander in the Valley of Tih (the wilderness) for forty years.

Even during this difficult period, Allah's mercy remained with them through the supplications and leadership of Prophet Musa عليه السلام:

  • When they became thirsty, striking the rock with the staff caused twelve springs to flow.

  • Clouds provided shade from the intense heat.

  • Manna and quails (Man wa Salwa) were provided as food from Allah.

7. Bright and Instructive Lessons from the Life of Prophet Musa عليه السلام

The life of Prophet Musa عليه السلام contains countless lessons for the Muslim Ummah and for humanity as a whole:

  • Complete trust and faith: Even when all apparent means seem to have disappeared—as when Pharaoh was pursuing the Children of Israel and the sea stood before them—one should maintain firm trust in Allah.

  • Speaking the truth and courage: One must have the courage to proclaim the truth before even the most powerful, oppressive, and arrogant ruler of the time.

  • Forbearance, patience, and perseverance: Prophet Musa عليه السلام continued to deal with the stubbornness, ignorance, and repeated disobedience of the Children of Israel with patience and wisdom over many years, while continually seeking guidance for them.

  • Modesty and good character: In Madyan, he helped the daughters of Prophet Shu‘ayb عليه السلام while maintaining modesty and respect, and then withdrew without demanding anything in return.

  • Seeking knowledge and humility: The account of Prophet Musa عليه السلام and Khidr عليه السلام in Surah al-Kahf teaches that no matter how knowledgeable a person may be, he should remain humble and continue seeking knowledge.

Conclusion

The life of Prophet Musa عليه السلام is an extraordinary story of the struggle between truth and falsehood, the supremacy of monotheism, patience, courage, and complete reliance upon Allah.

His life teaches us that when a person places sincere trust in Allah and remains steadfast upon the truth, Allah Almighty can bring down tyrants like Pharaoh and create paths of salvation for His servants from places and in ways that they could never have imagined.

Note: I have rendered a few statements more carefully where the original text presents historical details that are not explicitly established in the Qur'an—for example, the claim about astrologers/priests predicting Musa's birth and the exact circumstances surrounding Pharaoh's fear.
